The Mayans had one of the most complex writing systems of Meso-america. The writing inscriptions are found on stone, pottery, and in books, and are known as codices, or codex. Some of their recordings are of major events that took place in their own lives and of their Mayan rulers and gods. They wrote in the form of hieroglyphics and other symbols, which were very complex and sometimes even had more than one meaning to each picture and symbol. It is known that the Mayans used more than 800 characters in their writing system. And it is widely believed that the characters used in their writing were reflections from their highly religious thoughts and views. Their writings came in 2 forms, logograms and syllabograms. Logograms would contain whole words in order to express meaning, while syllabograms are the syllables that are used to denote the sounding of the words. Together, the Mayans would use the compound writing method of logosyllabie. And so with this form of writing system, the Mayans would mostly tell stories about astronomy, their calenders, and their forseen prophecies. ![]() |
